Greetings tune fans.  Can you feel it?  The excitement is building.  The music portion of SXSW is but three weeks away.  Here is the latest development:

Waterloo Records Parking Lot Parties

As I’ve mentioned before, feasting upon the abundance of live music during South By does not require that you spend so much as a skinny penny.  Free showcases are everywhere to be found.  One of the best is put on in the parking lot of Waterloo Records by the fine folks at that Austin institution.  Waterloo typically has a fine line-up, but in my opinion, this year they have outdone themselves.  From Wednesday the 13th thru Saturday the 17th, a total of 29 acts will perform, between noon and 6 pm daily.  The Friday showcase is monumental with country legends Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell, and English superstars Richard Thompson and Billy Bragg.  Of course, as I like to say, it all depends upon what you like.  Go here to check the schedule for yourself:

Matt Sturtevant’s The Sound of Austin

You know, sometimes music tips can be about something besides music.  For example, my buddy local photographer Matt Sturtevant, who self-published the fabulous coffee-table book of Austin musicians The Sound of Austin last year, will have an exhibit of his work the entire

month of March at the Continental Gallery.  Matt’s work features a Who’s Who of the finest singers and players residing in A-town including Willie, Alejandro Escovedo, Kat Edmondson,

Shawn Colvin, Jimmie Vaughan and Gary Clark, Jr just to mention a few.  You can probably even order a copy for yourself here:

Head-up: Free show

Austin’s Central Market supermarkets aren’t just for shopping. This being “The Live MusicCapital of the World,” both north and south locations have excellent live music on a regular basis.  This Thursday (2/21) at 6 pm at the North Lamar store, catch Tex-Mex firebrand Patricia Vonne performing on the patio with her dynamic acoustic trio. Patricia is an electrifying roots-rocker who delivers in both English and Spanish.

Pat Cosgrove considers himself Austin's quintessential live-music fan.  He can be foundcatching shows several nights a week at venues such as the continental Gallery and the White Horse Saloon, to name a few.  He is constantly searching for the next hot, under-the-radar act and coolest new live-music joints.  He is also a world traveler, a tequila drinker and a dancing fool.  If you see him out on the town, don't hesitate to say howdy.
