Welcome to the fun and info-filled new addition to the home of Spontuneous: Songs in the Key of ATX, a blog covering what our favorite board game would not exist without: popular music. Twice weekly, yours truly will provide news, updates and tips about cool people, places, and events originating in Austin and beyond in the world of pop.  I, like you, am a music fanatic.  I could no more exist without the soul-nurturing mixture of rhythm, beat, and melody found in great tunes, than I could without the flavor, spice, texture and aroma that comprise the food that nourishes the body!  I have also had the privilege of working in the biz for a stretch—as the publicist for the award-winning PBS concert series Austin City Limits--which gave me an inside look at how talented music-makers do their thing.  Passing on stories, anecdotes, tips, and inside scoops will be my pleasure.  Alright, let’s get with it!

Midway thru the first month of the year it’s not too early to point out that one of the planet’sbiggest popular music events is less than two months away.  Unless you have been holing up in a cave on the green belt or don’t follow music at all, you know I am talking about Austin’s own South by Southwest.  Running from March 12-17, the music portion of the fest (which includes film and interactive segments) will feature hundreds of bands from across the world, from virtual unknowns to hit makers such as Vampire Weekend, the Mavericks, and Charlotte Church.  And if you don’t have the 750 smackeroos to purchase a badge allowing access to all events, don’t sweat it.  There are so many fab unofficial events going on you can get your fill of great music without spending one thin dime.

Austin City Limits

Another Austin-based music institution will be cranking up during the same time period.  The renowned PBS music series Austin City Limits, my old stomping grounds,  traditionally kicks off a new season of tapings by hauling in the likes of hall-of-famers, million sellers, and hot up-

and-comers in town for South By (the moniker hip locals use when talking about SXSW).  While nothing has yet been announced, you can get ready for what should be an awesome Season 38 (imagine that, a guy by the name of Gerald R. Ford was president when ACL taped its first show—none other than our own Willie Nelson).  To find out how to get yourself into the ACL audience, click here.

ACL  Music Festival

While we’re on the topic of Austin’s most heralded music happenings, I might as well mention that the third mega-event that has helped put Austin on the pop music radar—the Austin City Limits Music Festival—rolls around last, but certainly not least.   This year’s fest goes to back-to-back weekends (Oct. 4-6 and 11-13) for the first time in what will be the 12th addition.  Click here for info.

That’s it for my initial report.  Shoot me a line below if you have questions or comments and be sure to come back on Mondays and Thursdays for regular updates.  Until then, don’t forget that life is a song worth singing!
